Introduction

On July 21st, 1861, one of the most well known battles of the Civil War took place. The Battle of Bull Run, also known as the Battle of 1st Manassas, was the very first battle of the Civil War. In this battle, the Confederates strategically beat and greatly out-maneuvered the Union, causing them to withdraw and retreat. The most critical fighting of this battle was centered on Henry Hill, in Manassas, Virginia. This battlefield was not only a place that marked the first win for the Confederates, it was also the location in which General Thomas J. Jackson had received his famous nickname “Stonewall” from General Bernard Bee (“There stands Jackson like a stone wall! Rally behind the Virginians!”).
